Instructor:  Mr. Luther Gardner

Mr. Gardner is a certified Vocational Instructor with 13 years of experience as the HVAC Teacher at Somerset County Technology Center and 9 years of prior experience as an HVAC technician. Mr. Gardner has his Vocational I and II Certification from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He also holds certificates in EPA Section 608, ARI ICE—Residential Air Conditioning and Heating, ARI ICE–Light Commercial Air Conditioning and Heating. This program is certified by the Partnership for Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Accreditation (PAHRA); the first Secondary Program in the State of Pennsylvania to be certified.

Course Description

This program prepares students to apply technical knowledge and skills to install, repair and maintain commercial and domestic heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Instruction includes theory and application of basic principles involved in conditioning air (cooling and heating); filtering, and controlling humidity; operating characteristics of various units and parts; blueprint reading; use of technical reference manuals; the diagnosis of malfunctions; overhaul, repair and adjustment of units and parts such as pumps, compressors, valves, springs and connections; and repair of electric/electronic and pneumatic control systems.   

HEATING, AIR CONDITIONING AND REFRIGERATION MECHANICS/INSTALLERS ARE ON THE STATE’S HIGH PRIORITY OCCUPATION LIST!

Required Supplies/Shop Equipment 

Students who enroll in a career & technology program at SCTC are required to provide certain supplies and/or safety equipment needed for full participation in their program. These items remain the property of the student and may be taken home at the end of the school year. Required items for the HVAC Program are listed below:
 
Approved safety glasses
Leather work shoes (no nylon or fabric panels)
